Event Submission Guidelines
Event submissions are currently unavailable.
Wakalist helps people discover African, Afro-Caribbean, and diaspora-inspired events across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
You can’t submit event details or artwork here. The guidelines below explain our listing criteria.
1. What Events Can I Submit?
We feature culturally relevant events across six categories:
- Nightlife: Afrobeats and Amapiano parties, DJ nights, club nights, and day parties.
- Live Music: Concerts, live performances, and artist showcases.
- Festivals: Cultural festivals, carnivals, music festivals, and food festivals.
- Arts & Culture: Comedy, theatre, spoken word, exhibitions, and film screenings.
- Food & Drink: Tastings, pop-ups, brunches, and cultural dining experiences.
- Community: Cultural markets, networking events, meetups, talks, and workshops.
Not sure which category fits your event? That’s okay. We’ll help place it in the most relevant category.
2. Event Requirements
To be considered for Wakalist, your event should:
- Be culturally relevant: Have a meaningful connection to African, Afro-Caribbean, or diaspora culture.
- Be within our coverage area: Take place in Toronto or the GTA. Exceptions outside this area may be considered at Wakalist’s editorial discretion.
- Be open to the public: Free and ticketed events are welcome, including events requiring registration.
- Have confirmed details: Include an upcoming date, time, and location.
- Be submitted by an authorized person: You must be the organizer or have permission to submit on the organizer’s behalf.
3. What Information Do I Need?
Please have the following ready:
- Event name and description
- Date and time
- Venue name and address, including postal code
- High-quality event poster or image
- Ticket price or free admission details
- Ticket or registration link, if applicable

You can also include details such as performers, age restrictions, or accessibility information. Make sure the information is accurate and any submitted links work correctly.
Artwork is required: one static JPG, PNG or WebP image, up to 10 MB, at least 200 × 200px and no more than 40 million pixels. Your original proportions are preserved; discovery cards use a 4:5 crop.
4. What Events Don’t Qualify?
We generally don’t list:
- Private parties, personal celebrations, or invitation-only events.
- Religious services or private family gatherings.
- Regular restaurant or bar listings without a specific event.
- Online-only events.
- Events outside our coverage area without a strong connection to our audience.
- Events that have already ended or don’t have confirmed details.
- Duplicate, misleading, or unverifiable events.
- Events submitted without the organizer’s permission.
5. How Are Events Selected?
Wakalist is a curated event-discovery platform. We review submissions to determine whether they are relevant and useful to our community.
We consider:
- Cultural relevance: Does the event align with Wakalist’s focus?
- Audience appeal: Is it an experience our community would be interested in?
- Accuracy: Are the details complete and reliable?
- Authenticity: Is the event legitimate and submitted by an authorized person?
- Location: Is it within our coverage area or relevant to our Toronto-area audience?
We welcome events from established organizers and emerging creators.
Submitting an event does not guarantee publication. All submissions are subject to Wakalist’s editorial standards.
